Whether your trip is a camping, trail or driving one, you can shop strategically and save yourself a lot of money; it all starts with planning smartly and ahead of time.
Are you budget conscious? Plan to:
Save on costs
Do- it-yourself
Maintain equipment
To save on costs avoid last minute and impulse buys. Plan ahead for your trip, this way you can take advantage of discount items and close outs when they go on sale. Make a shopping list of your equipments, gear and food needs. If shopping online look for deals with coupons and free shipping.

Watch for 1/2 price sales and stock up on trail, camping and travel wear. If you are shopping off season watch for clearance winter wear around the end of January to beginning of February. Watch for Summer equipment sale around the middle to the end of July. What about your water? A 32 oz Gatorade bottle is cheaper than an expensive heavy hard plastic. it is durable enough and will cost you little to replace if lost.
You can download and print free USGS quads maps for planning your trip. If you want to use them on the trail you can include the margins in the print out.
Instead of staying at a hotel the night before an alpine start, try camping instead. Compare the cost of renting equipment and gear with buying. Some items such as mountaineering boots and tents could be a bargain if rented. Check out rental companies for the better deal. Look for rental companies that sell used gear at discount prices. Some items may be cheaper if bought, planning ahead and checking out the best buys versus the rentals will pay off.
There are second hand 'Buy and Sell' stores where you can get good deals on second stuff. With smart planning, shopping wisely and maintaining equipment, you will save and be a winner.
