Are you overweight or obese and are planning on losing weight in the new year?
There are several approaches to treating overweight/obesity; the two most common methods are exercise and diet. Exercise and diet are as a result of our choices; they are both free approaches that require lifestyle changes. Sometimes behaviour change is necessary to treat bad diet and exercise habits that are difficult to change.
Unfortunately, exercise or diet alone will not guarantee your success with weight loss, the two must be combined to lose weight keep it off and be healthy.
This article is about choosing the right weight loss strategy to lose weight, keep it off and maintain a healthy weight long-term.
Selecting a Plan
If you are joining or purchasing a program away from home you must be aware of what is included, the cost and the length of the program. These three factors if not well understood can lead to failure and drop outs.
Remember once you lose the desired weight, you will need to manage your weight to control weight gain. You have to think long-term and develop the right lifestyle habits.

Some commercial weight loss programs may focus on DIET only while others may focus on EXERCISE only. Diet and exercise if not combined will not guarantee success.
Your plan to lose weight must include exercise and diet modification. If you choose an EXERCISE only program, you must then implement a DIET plan at home, you can do this alone by shopping for and preparing your own meals. it is not difficult.
If you choose a DIET only Program, you must implement an EXERCISE program at home along with it, you can do this on your own by designing an exercise program for yourself.
Diet modification must include healthy eating and calorie control. Just cutting out certain foods or eating less may lead to failure.
You must master the recommended physical activity for everyone before you move on to other forms of exercise or more vigorous ones.
Remember you do not need a budget to set realistic goals to lose weight and keep it off. With discipline and motivation you can do it. A Lifestyle change would be required to modify your diet and to increase or change exercise habits.
A weight loss program that incorporates both exercise and diet is the ideal weight loss strategy for someone with a body mass index (BMI) of 25-35. There are many of them around, but the costs if not included in your weight loss plans could make it a financial burden. This can lead to failure due to financial reasons.
