Do you need medical care or self care? Making the right decision is important to your health and longevity. Although they both involve taking care of bodily functions, they are not the same.

Self Care is Health Care provided by you at home, with decisions made by you.

Medical Care is Health Care provided by health care professionals at a health care facility or doctor's office.

Self Care is preventative.

Self care begins at home before the need to see a health professional and will continue at home after seeing one. Self care is a life long health initiative. With good self care we can live healthy lives, prevent illnesses and chronic diseases.

With self care, the individual takes responsibility for his/her health and health care costs.

Medical Care is curative.

Medical care begins when you visit a health professional with a complaint or after symptoms of disease develop.

With medical care the individual has no control of his health care costs or responsibility for his/her care. Medical care can be short term or long term.

Medical care could involve treatment and/or cure, medication or surgery. Some medical care can be ineffective, some can cause side effects.

With good self care one can avoid the need for unnecessary medical intervention. Self care must begin before symptoms of disease develop for good health and vitality.

Self care involves making decisions whether to provide self care or seek medical care, it involves when to seek medical attention and what type of medical attention.

Self care is required by everyone; babies and the elderly receive their self care from their parents and/or care givers.

Benefits of Self Care With self care you take responsibility for your health and not the medical profession. With good self care you will protect your yourself from becoming ill, dying prematurely, developing communicable and non communicable diseases. Self care will keep you healthy throughout the lifespan.

In the event you become ill, self care before your illness can prevent a serious outcome and provide hope for a full recovery. After an illness or hospitalization, self care on return home will improve quality of life and hasten recovery.

We all provide self care to some extent, some of us good care through good habits and some of us a mix of good and bad habits. Most often, the bad habits over-ride the good ones and in time we fall ill to diseases.
