World No Tobacco Day is a global event organized by the World Health Organization(WHO) to raise awareness of the effects of tobacco and to employ measures to reduce the number of tobacco users globally.

Every year on May 31 the world celebrates this global health day. The theme this year is: "Tobacco- a threat to development."

The tobacco industry poses a threat to the sustainable development of all countries and to the health and economic well-being of their citizens. This year the World No Tobacco Day campaign will seek to demonstrate these threats and propose measures we can all take to protect our health from tobacco use. Read about World No Tobacco Day.

The measures called "MPOWER" proposed by WHO are:

M- Monitor tobacco use and prevention policies

P- Protect people from tobacco use

O- Offer help to quit tobacco use

W- Warn about the dangers of tobacco

E- Enforce bans of tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship

R- Raise taxes on tobacco

Awareness

According to WHO only a small percent of people, globally understand the health risks of tobacco. Many smokers don't know how bad smoking is for their health; many don't know that smoking is a major cause of diseases that kill.

At the same time, among smokers who are aware of the dangers of tobacco, most want to quit. By raising awareness of the dangers of tobacco smoke and the measures that can be taken to protect health we can increase the number of smokers who want to quit.

Government and health professionals can raise awareness of the dangers of tobacco use by warning the public, by supporting World No Tobacco Day.

Family and friends can support smokers who want to quit. SMOKERS CAN QUIT.
