The Effects Of Obesity On Health

Although overweight and obese people may be concerned about appearance, acceptance and clothes sizes, the health consequences of being an unhealthy weight are more serious.

Overweight and obesity are risk factors for many health related problems including chronic diseases and premature death.

The tool for diagnosing obesity is the body mass index(BM)).

  1. Underweight is a BMI of under 18

  2. Healthy weight, a BMI of 18-24.9

  3. Overweight, a BMI of 25-30

  4. Obese, a BMI of 30 and over

A body mass index of over 25 is an unhealthy weight; our aim is to have a BMI of less than 25.

What if we don't have a healthy weight?

Obsity is a major risk factor for these chronic diseases:

  • Cancer

  • Heart disease

  • Heart attacks

  • Strokes

  • Type 2 diabetes

  • COPD

These chronic diseases can lead to permanent disability or even death.

Fortunately individuals with an unhealthy weight can lose weight through a combination of diet and exercise.

Very obese people may need more than diet and exercise.
