Is Santa Claus A Jolly Healthy One?

Are you planning on meeting Santa Clause this holiday season? Since Santa meets many boys and girls during the holidays, he is a busy man, admired, loved and sought by many.

How is his health?

For far too long Santa Claus has been seen as an obese, but cheerful and jolly soul; however, this image is not good for him and those who are struggling to maintain a healthy weight. it is time for him to "ditch the sleigh and start walking or biking, to lose the jelly belly."

How much walking should Santa do? 150 minutes of moderate intensity per week. This is important especially since he could be sitting for long periods during the holiday season.

Santa will also have to go for the carrot sticks and vegies instead of the cookies, if he needs to lose weight.

A body mass index(BMI) of more than 24.9 means he must lose weight? How much weight? Five to 10 % of his body weight.

Belly fat is a health risk for many diseases including cardiovascular disease. If Santa must be healthy, he will have to make lifestyle changes to protect his health. Some lifestyle changes he could make are:

  • Be physically active

  • Lose weight if overweight

  • Develop healthy eating habits

  • Do not abuse alcohol

  • Quit smoking

Developing these habits will prevent Santa from developing heart disease, stroke, diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma and many other diseases.

What can boys and girls do?

Boys and girls can ask Santa to deliver their gifts on a bicycle or walking. They can ask Santa for gifts of health to encourage his own health promotion.

Instead of giving Santa cookies, boys and girls can give him healthy snacks, ones that are not loaded with sugar or salt.

This holiday season let us all promote a healthy Santa Clause.
