There are tons of weight loss programs and millions of people who are either contemplating losing weight or are involved in some type of weight loss initiative.

At the same time, many people drop out of weight loss programs. Some lose weight only to gain it all back. The FAILURE to lose weight and keep it off is high.

Some weight loss initiatives are commercial weight loss programs such as Jenny Craig, Dr. Bernstein and Nutrisystem. These are not always the right weight loss program.

This article offers simple tips on choosing a plan for successful weight loss.

The reason for weight gain is consuming more calories that the body burns, leaving you with a calorie SURPLUS.

Once you are overweight or obese, losing weight must not only involve balancing calories, but ensuring a calorie DEFICIT.

Losing weight would involve diet and exercise modification by either:

  1. Burning more calories

  2. Consuming less calories

  3. Or doing both

For many it will be both. If you are just overweight, you may ONLY need to consume less calories or exercise more.

If you are obese, you will need to do both.

Selecting A Plan

Choose a plan that is reasonable, one that you can follow and stick with long-term.

Set long-term goals and make compliance an integral part of those goals.

Avoid quick fixes and short term commitment.

For successful weight loss DIET and Exercise must be combined. Any weight loss plan must therefore include both healthy eating and physical activity.

Some weight loss programs; however, can be expensive and can drain your finances. If you do not have a large budget, don't give up. There are ways to be successful without a budget. For example:

  1. You can join a DIET only program and develop your own exercise program

  2. You can develop your own diet program at home and join a fitness/exercise program

  3. You can do it all yourself, by developing your own exercise and diet programs at home.

Remember each person is unique. Your reasons for excess weight may be different from someone you know, so choose a program that is right for you. Believe in your self.
