Being overweight or obese puts you at greater risk risk for type 2 diabetes. If you develop diabetes and are also oveweight you are dealing with two health problems

Once diagnosed with the disease, maintaining good health will require both weight control and disease management.

*Because you are a diabetic you will require special care to control your blood sugar.

*Because you are overweight you will need to lose weight through a weight mangement program.

*These two will require SELF CARE, they must be combined. Any weight loss plans must be integrated with blood glucose management and any medical supervision.

Self Care is health care at home provided by you to take care of your health. When you have a disease like diabetes your self care must include following medical advice and keeping appointments.

After seeing a diabetes specialist you will need to provide self-care at home immediately. Self-care will help you maintain good general health and control your blood sugar. A healthy weight will:

  • Help you manage your diabetes.

  • Improve your blood glucose

  • Prevent complications from diabetes.

  • Remove other health risk factors

  • Increase your changes of being cured

Self Care Tips For Diabetics

Once you are diagnosed with diabetes work on losing 5-10 % of your body weight. You can calculate it online and from home.

Set a goal to lose weight by making changes to your diet and being physically active. A loss of 5-10% of body weight combined with 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise each week is a realistic goal. Know your body mass index, this can be calculated online and is available free. Your body mass index (BMI) will be 25 and over if you are overweight and 30 and over if you are obese. If you are on medication for your diabetes, tell your doctor about your plans to lose weight and ask for support and recommendations. Most medical professionals do not include weight control in their care so you will have to manage your weight at home with self-care. Weight management programs will help. Here is a weight management program that is easy to use and free, it will enable a diabetic to provide self-care with or without medical supervision. For more information, Click Here.
