Cancer
Cancer is an uncontrollable growth of abnormal cells, it is a chronic disease and the leading cause of death worldwide. Many of those who die did so prematurely because their cancer could have been prevented.
According to a 2012 report from the World Health Organization(WHO), about 8.2 million people die annually from cancer. This could be you, a family member or someone close to you.
These are the leading cancer deaths are:
Lung (1.59 million deaths)
Liver (745 000 deaths)
Stomach (723 000 deaths)
Colorectal (694 000 deaths)
Breast (521 000 deaths)
Oesophageal cancer (400 000 deaths) (1).
According to the report the 5 most common cancers among men were lung, prostate, colorectal, stomach, and liver cancer. Among women the 5 most common sites diagnosed were breast, colorectum, lung, cervix, and stomach.
The main risk factors for cancer are unhealthy lifestyle habits, fortunately these lifestyle habits are avoidable. They are:
Unhealthy eating
Too little physical activity or exercise
Smoking
Overweight
Over use of alcohol
Air pollution
Some cancers are a result of inherited genes and therefore unavoidable. Fortunately one can reduce the unavoidable risk factors like hereditary by controlling the avoidable ones such as unhealthy eating and smoking.
Prevent Cancer
-Cancer can be prevented by avoiding exposure to common risk factors, the lifestyle risk factors that cause them.
-Cancer can be cured, by surgery, radiotherapy or chemotherapy, especially if it is detected early.
-Prevention is better than cure, always.
-If diagnosed with cancer, making a lifestyle change to modify existing bad habits will aid recovery
